Diabetes Educator Dietitian
Kenora Area Health Access Centre Diabetes Program, KEEWATIN
WAASEGIIZHIG NANAANDAWE'IYEWIGAMIG, based in Keewatin, Ontario, provides primary health care and preventative services that offer clients a range of options including prevention, assessment, diagnosis and treatment by a diverse team of health professionals, educators and support workers. Their main purpose is to foster healthy Aboriginal people and communities through traditional Aboriginal and contemporary models of care and engaging wholistic health concepts relative to mind, body and spirit.
The Opportunity: The Diabetes Educator Dietitian will function as part of the Primary Health Care Team based out of the satellite office in Kenora, Ontario. The program functions in collaboration with an inter-disciplinary team including non-regulated health care professionals. One of the key responsibilities is to provide a standard model of self-care that is responsive to the diverse needs and increasing level and risk of diabetes.
Reporting directly to the Group Lead, the Diabetes Educator Dietitian provides assessment, education and counseling, and therapeutic support to promote nutritional care planning among individual diabetes clients and community groups.
Qualifications: Post secondary degree in dietetics, nutrition or related field Certified or eligible for certification as a Certified Diabetes Educator or willingness to complete the “Diabetes Education Certificate” offered at the College Experience and understanding of wholistic health and well-being Experience and demonstrated ability to work in an inter-disciplinary team Willingness and ability to travel to 12 sites in 10 communities Valid drivers’ license Current criminal record check Commitment to ongoing training and professional development relevant to job requirements Positive attitude and capacity to act as a healthy lifestyle role model Experience in working with Aboriginal people and communities and demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal culture, values and perspectives a definite asset Ability to speak and understand Ojibwe an asset
